Hospitals are categorized in several ways by the CDC-NHAMCS survey:

  • Profit status: The majority of hospitals are non-profit. The remainder are either for profit institutions or government run (VA hospitals).

  • Location: The majority of hospitals are in urban areas (metropolitan locations).

  • Academic status: The majority of hospitals are considered “community” hospitals, meaning they have no residency programs and do not consider themselves to be “academic” teaching centers.
